Born in Chicago in 1962, Tim Chess spent his first fourteen years moving around on the east coast. He then moved to San Diego, living there on and off for twenty years. He currently resides in Oregon.
Drawing with intensity for hours each day, he works on both found paper (bags, cereal boxes, newspaper, etc.) and art paper, using mostly soft pastels, oil pastels, and crayon. Each work is spontaneous, without the use of models or preconceived ideas, often starting chaotically and evolving into the finished works.
